And the strip searches apply to people with minor infractions–not wearing a seat belt, failing to signal, disorderly conduct, failing to have your dog on a leash. This court, Justice Kennedy included, have ruled that the police can’t be bothered with figuring out who is a serious threat who needs to be searched and someone who forgot to buckle up. For a conservative court that professes concern about the overreach of “Big Government” this is quite an overreach–reaching right into your bum.

One of the through-the-looking-glass aspects of this court challenge is that conservatives are attacking an individual mandate that was introduced in 1993 by a Republican, championed by the conservative Heritage Foundation and implemented in Massachusetts by a GOP governor. That governor is now running around the nation denouncing a health care plan that was modeled on his own. Weird times, indeed.
