I heard today an estimate that the money spent on lotteries every year comes out to roughly $500 per person in the United States. When you think about it, as much as people gripe about being forced to pay taxes, lotteries amount to voluntary taxation.

The awkward offering of a big bet during the last GOP debate isn’t that big a deal in isolation. The problem is that it adds to existing suspicions that Mitt isn’t comfortable in his own skin, that he’s not a genuine person you could share a beer with. Romney’s advisors are probably breathing a sigh of relief that he didn’t want to bet a million dollars.
