Move over

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

eatCOLOR Move overThe automatic cuts to defense triggered by the failure of a bipartisan “super committee”  have, in turn, triggered howls of concern that the cuts will devastate the military.  Turns out that the “cuts” aren’t even cuts at all, but a slowing of the increase in defense spending.  What hysterical nonsense at a time when we are in a Great Recession and we’re spending as much on the military as during World War II.

Mmm, pie

Monday, February 14th, 2011

The GOP and Obama argue over how to carve up the budgetary pieOh, sure, there are a lot of facets to the huge federal budget, and Obama has even had the temerity to propose some cuts to defense.  But for the most part, it is programs that benefit the most vulnerable among us that are the first to be put on the chopping block.  After all, the tax cuts for the wealthiest must be protected at all costs.

Sacred cow

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

oxC Sacred cowThe commission’s ideas are only suggestions at this point and are being met with howls of protest from both sides of the political aisle.  But what’s really appalling is that leaving the richest among us untouched, it perpetuates an ever-widening income gap in the U.S. that, ultimately, threatens our democracy.
