The debt ceiling fight just ended was fought mostly on terms dictated by the far-right wing of the Republican party. Increasing taxes, even on the wealthiest millionaires and billionaires, was a non-starter. Compromise was out of the question, with the radical right perfectly willing to drive the economy off a cliff. Amazing. By today’s standards, Richard Nixon ( EPA, price controls, traveling to China, etc.) would be denounced as a commie. Or at least a RINO.

As of this writing the debt bomb has not been defused. Amazingly, there are some on the far right who seem quite willing, even anxious, to see what kind of economic damage will be done to our still-fragile economy, no matter how devastating that explosion might prove to be.

Virtually every economist says that the U.S. defaulting on its debt for the first time in history would be a devastating blow to the already weak economy and could plunge it into chaos. In short, a BIG HOT FISCAL MESS of epic proportions. And yet Republicans are now floating the idea that it wouldn’t be so bad for the U.S. to default for a few days. If we needed more proof that the radical, wing-nut, aluminum headgear right has gone around the bend, here it is. There is nothing “conservative” about this.
