The stockings hung by the fire are bulging for those Americans who need a break the least. Good to see some Democrats showing some spine and pushing back against this example of trickle-up economics.

So, given the opportunity to offer a strong argument for extending middle-class tax cuts and putting the Republican’ts in the position of arguing for cutting taxes of mil/billionionaires, the dems…..punt. One rationale is that they think it may be easier to reach an agreement after the mid-term elections. Seriously? After the GOP has made significant gains (assuming the pundits are correct) the lame duck dems think they’ll be in a better position to bargain? What a wasted opportunity. What a bunch of cluckleheads.

This cartoon is in reaction, really, to not just the Democrats’ tendency to water down health care reform, but also the proclivity to bargain from weakness on many issues. The stimulus plan, for example, was a case where the Dems bent over backwards to seek “bipartisanship” only to be rewarded with no Republican votes for the plan. None. Zippo. The result was a more cautious stimulus which many, including uber-economist Paul Krugman, have warned was too small to have the desired result. Here’s hoping that the final health care reform product is not such thin gruel.
