With the cheering for death in various forms during the recent Republican debates, it was reminiscent of the Romans vs. Christians vs. lions thing. Two thumbs up— or is it thumbs down?

The Tea Party freshmen were elected to be rigid ideologues, dadgummit, and they ‘re going to remain pure no matter what. And that means they don’t give a damn if the nation’s already staggering economy takes another body blow. Meanwhile, in the real world, people are most concerned about the lack of JOBS.

Even a conservative columnist like David Brooks is appalled that the far right-wing faction that has seized control of the GOP is refusing to negotiate in good faith. It seems every time the Democrats concede on something like tax cuts, the right makes a new demand. They simply, as Brooks points out, refuse to take yes for an answer. We will be presented with a truly radical budget proposal this week from Wisconsin’s own conservative poster boy Paul Ryan. It shifts Medicaid to a black grant given to states and converts Medicare to a plan that no longer guarantees care to seniors, but subsidizes private insurance. You have to give it to conservatives, their push to dismantle the social safety net is nothing if not relentless. Oh, and at the same time their budget increases the financial burden on the middle class and poor, it cuts taxes on the wealthiest.
