Even though unemployment continues to be a problem that is taking a devastating personal and economic toll, you wouldn’t know it listening to the major parties. They’ve both bought into the idea that debt is paramount and eliminating it trumps everything else. Meanwhile, the suffering continues and we head for a double-dip recession.

President Obama did a fair amount of pandering to the poobahs of the Chamber, but I thought he challenged them as well. I was especially struck at his call for businesses to get up off the huge sacks of profits they’re sitting on and start hiring workers. Good luck prying those wallets open.
