The Sherrod non-scandal is another example of how freaked out the “mainstream media” has become to charges that they are now, or have ever been, even slightly left of center. Andrew Breitbart, conservative blogger and ”activitst”, posts a heavily edited video of Ms. Sherrod erroneously portraying her as a racist. Mayhem ensues as the media, the White House and Ag Sec. Tom Vilsack leap into the fray and fire the woman. But wait, when the refs have a chance to view the entire video, it turns out that Ms. Sherrod is anything but a racist and is offered an apology and a new job to make amends for the shabby treatment she received. Despite this debacle, in an interview on CBS this morning she was asked what the incident showed us about the state of race relations in the U.S. today. Fine, but what about the state of the media, when spurious charges are floated by right-wing hucksters and then officials–even the White House–fly into action without all the facts. Those would be the facts that you won’t get from conservatives with an agenda that is so divorced from reality that they simply ignore facts that don’t suit them, or, in the Sherrod case, edit things to fit their own narrative. The media was snookered. So was the White House and Vilsack. And it will happen again. Shameful.
